One Direction Make US Chart History With ‘Four’

One Direction have become the first group in US chart history to see their first four albums shoot straight to number one.

‘Four’ sold 387,000 copies in its first week Stateside ousting Taylor Swift’s ‘1989’ from the summit to claim their fourth chart-topper on the bounce.

The boys’ previous records - 2011’s ‘Up All Night’, 2012’s ‘Take Me Home’ and 2013’s ‘Midnight Memories’ - all stormed in at the top spot upon their release.

‘Four’ is also the second fastest selling of the year in America after ‘1989’, which sold a phenomenal 1.28million copies in its first week.

Back in the 1950s and 1960s, The Monkees and The Kingston Trio both achieved number ones with their first four albums, however they weren’t immediate.

Beyoncé and DMX hold the solo artist record with five albums shooting straight to the chart summit, while Britney Spears first four albums hit the US number one.

With worldwide sales of over 2 million in its first week, ‘Four’ has also hit the top of the album charts in the UK, Canada, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Netherlands, Belgium, Greece and Japan.

Their global chart success comes hot off the heels of One Direction’s incredible night at the American Music Awards where they performed their new single ‘Night Changes’ and took home 3 awards including Artist of the Year.
