Lily Allen: 'My Video Mocks Robin Thicke, NOT Miley Cyrus'
She speaks to us about the comeback and her new album!
Lily Allen has told us that her controversial ‘Hard Out Here’ video is an intentional response to Robin Thicke’s ‘Blurred Lines’.
Premiered earlier this week, the eye-popping ‘Hard Out Here’ video challenges the portrayal of women in pop culture.
Despite the butt-shaking twerking throughout the video, Lily says that it isn’t a reaction to the Miley Cyrus phenomenon – however the same can’t be said about Robin Thicke!
“My video has actually nothing to do with Miley Cyrus,” 28-year-old Lily told us.
“It wasn’t a direct response to anything she’s done so someone else has come up with that themselves. It was never intentional… Robin Thicke, however, was (intentional)!”
One scene in video directly parodies the part of Robin Thicke’s ‘Blurred Lines’ video where the scantily clad models erect helium balloons spelling “Robin Thicke has a big d***”
Despite the criticism from some quarters, Lily feels it was important to make a mark with her first solo material in over three years.
She explained: “I think you’ve got to come back (from hiatus) with something strong and I’m really pleased with how it’s been received mostly… and sad that some people have got the wrong end of the stick, but that’s life!”
Lily also gave us an insight into some of the themes explored on her as-yet-untitled third studio album, which is due to land in 2014.
“(The album explores) a range of different topics and things that I’ve seen over the past couple of years while I’ve been away,” Lily said.
“There’s songs about love, there’s songs about heartbreak, there’s songs about things that have been deep and profound and affected me in great ways and not so great ways. Y’know and just little social observations as well.”
