Jay Z reveals ‘Tidal’ plans alongside music stars
He was joined on stage by an A-List of music superstars
A jaw-dropping line-up of music stars lined-up alongside Jay Z last night to pledge their allegiance to a new music streaming service called Tidal.
Alicia Keys, Beyonce, Daft Punk, Jack White, Kanye West and others rubbed elbows at the exclusive launch event, while Calvin Harris and Coldplay’s Chris Martin appeared via livestream.
“We came together before you on this day… with one voice in unity in the hopes that today will be a moment that will forever change the course of music history,” said Keys.
“Our goal is simple: We want to create a better service and a better experience for both fans and artists, and that is our promise to the world.”
She went on to explain that Tidal’s mission statement was to “preserve music importance in our lives” and spoke of artists “delivering unique experiences.”
Following her speech Keys invited the superstar music line-up, referred to as her ‘co-owners’, to sign a declaration on stage.
Meanwhile, speaking to Billboard, Jay Z expanded on the idea behind Tidal.
He said: “We saw the movement and how everything was going and figured that this could possibly be the last music format that we see in this lifetime.
“We didn’t like the direction music was going and thought maybe we could get in and strike an honest blow and if the very least we did was make people wake up and try to improve the free-versus paid system…”
Each of the founding owners in Tidal have an equal stake in its equity.
Tidal will offer CD-quality and high-def music streaming for £19.99 a month.
