Last year Tom Cruise appeared on an Australian TV show and confirmed the news that Top Gun fans had been hoping for. He confirmed a Top Gun sequel was going to happen, however he revealed no further details at the time.

Now, further details have been revealed according to movieweb.com. The website reports that Top Gun 2, officially known as Top Gun Maverick will start filming this summer, with a release date of around a year later - 12th July 2019.

Although not a huge amount is known about the new film, most rumours surrounding the plot say it will be in the US back in the Navy fighters weapons school, nicknamed 'Top Gun'. Maverick (played by Tom Cruise) will now have progressed through the ranks and be at a higher level than he was in the original film. There are also rumours that Val Kilmer has expressed an interest in returning as Ice Man in the film.

Kelly Mcgillis and Tom Cruise

Rumours of the sequel to the 1986 film starring Tom Cruise, Kelly McGillis and Val Kilmer first started back in 2016 after the film's producer Jerry Bruckheimer tweeted a photo of himself with Tom saying, 'Just got back from a weekend in New Orleans to see my old friend @TomCruise and discuss a little Top Gun 2.'

The rumours continued, when in October 2016 Tom appeared on Graham Norton's TV show and explained, "We're trying to figure it out". However it has taken until now to get a full confirmation that it will be happening."

The original Top Gun film was a military romantic film following Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell as he joined the Top Gun Naval Fighter Weapons School where the best pilots went to refine their flying skills.

Since appearing in the original Top Gun film Tom Cruise has continued to appear in a number of blockbuster films including the Mission Impossible films, Edge of Tomorrow and last year's The Mummy remake.

Now take a look at the biggest films from 2017:

20. The Lost City Of Z

2013's The Immigrant is sadly still waiting for a UK release, so praise be to the cinematic gods that James Gray's The Lost City Of Z arrived without delay. Based on the true-life tale of British explorer Percy Fawcett (Charlie Hunnam), this dense but always gripping biopic is part political drama, part family drama and part adventure.
On discovering the remnants of an indigenous society, Fawcett spent his life trying to prove his Amazonian finds until his unexplained disappearance in 1925. Containing one of the most beautiful scenes of the year, this undseen gem deserves, nay, demands your attention.
