Robert Carlyle: 'Trainspotting 2 script is the best I've ever read!'

Begbie actor is equally excited and nervous about the sequel

Francis Begbie himself Robert Carlyle has heaped massive praise on the script for Trainspotting 2!

The 54-year-old Glasgow actor couldn’t be more excited about reviving his role as violent psychopath Begbie and reckons it will be a worthy successor to the cult classic original.

“We’ve already had a read-through of the script, we did that in the springtime,” Robert enthused to the NME.

“You’re going to think, 'Of course he’s going to say this,’ but honestly, it’s one of the best scripts I’ve f***ing read. I mean, ever. What (screenwriter) John Hodge has done is just so clever.”

John Hodge adapted the screenplay for the original 1996 movie, based on Irvine Welsh’s seminal book, and he has also worked with Trainspotting director Danny Boyle on a string of movies including The Beach and Trance.

Elsewhere in his interview with the NME, Robert admitted expectations are high for the film: “It’s nerve-wracking to a certain extent, because I’m obviously aware of just how much people loved the original film.

“People still quote lines to me on a fing daily basis. I get it everywhere; I can’t fing escape it! But I’m grateful for it too - Begbie has been f***ing terrific for me and my career.

“So therefore - and I think probably if you asked the rest of the boys, they’d feel the same - I’m slightly wary about it all.

He added: “So it’s a beautiful thing, this film. And though I’m obviously feeling a little bit tense about it because of the success of the first film, I’ll tell you this: if anyone can pull it off it’s Danny Boyle. He’s the best director I’ve ever worked with, he’s immense.”

Tentatively titled T2, filming on the movie is set to begin in Edinburgh next spring.
