Legendary British actor Richard E. Grant has joined the cast for the upcoming sixth season of Game of Thrones.

58-year-old Richard’s role is yet to be officially revealed by HBO, however his agency Arg Talent has added Game of Thrones to his vast online CV.

The Withnail and I, Doctor Who and Downton Abbey actor is the latest of a string of actors confirmed for the eagerly awaited new series.

Also joining the biggest show on television are veteran actor Max von Sydow (pictured) who takes over as the Three-Eyed Raven, Ian McShane in an as-yet-undisclosed role, Danish actor Pilou Asbæk as Euron Greyjoy and Harry Potter star Freddie Stroma as Samwell Tarly's brother Dickon.

The new season is based on the upcoming sixth novel The Winds of Winter in George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series together with select material from the fourth and fifth novels.

Building excitement ahead of its return, this summer Daenerys Targaryen herself Emilia Clarke described the script as “sick.”

She enthused to the Daily Mirror: “I’ve seen some of the new scripts and I’m like a kid on a sugar high. I can’t handle how sick some of them are.

“We’re just going to hit the audience with every episode, coming up with something more mental than the last. I can’t believe some of the twists in store.”

The sixth season of Game of Thrones hits Sky Atlantic in April 2016.
