Exactly a week after wowing The Oscars, Lady Gaga swapped the glitz and the glamour for a sub-zero challenge on Sunday morning (1st March).

Together with her fiancé Taylor Kinney, Gaga braved outside temperatures of -7C to plunge into the icy waters of Chicago’s Lake Michigan.

The happy couple were among 4,500 participants taking part in the annual Polar Plunge charity event in aid of the Special Olympics.

Gaga ditched her infamous headline-grabbing outfits for a more practical black t-shirt and legging for the challenge.

Screaming, she clung onto Taylor as they both dipped their bodies into the freezing waters in tandem. Gaga’s weave froze almost immediately as she came out of the water.

Testament to how cold the water is, more than 85% of the lake is currently covered in ice.

Sharing photos of the feat on Instagram, Gaga wrote: “(It) feels so good to do things for a good cause like the Special Olympics. It's great to donate money, but also great to donate a gesture of love for those who deserve to be showered with it.”

She added: “My weave froze!! Taylor gave me his hat I thought my wig was gonna freeze into and become one with the lake.”

Mother Monster wasn’t the only celebrity taking part in the challenge – actor and Chicago native Vince Vaughn also took part while wearing the outfit of the city’s hockey team The Blackhawks.

This year’s Polar Plunge raised more than $1million (£650,000) for the Special Olympics.
