Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling led the tributes, saying she was 'devastated'.
Other messages have poured in from actors who'd worked with the star, including a personal tribute from Daniel Radcliffe.
The Harry Potter star wrote fondly of the actor, who he worked alongside.
"Alan was extremely kind, generous, self-deprecating and funny. And certain things obviously became even funnier when delivered in his unmistakable double-bass.''
He is also one of the loyalest and most supportive people I've ever met in the film industry. He was so encouraging of me both on set and in the years post-Potter. I'm pretty sure he came and saw everything I ever did on stage both in London and New York. He didn't have to do that."
Co-star Emma Watson said she'd miss conversations with Alan.

Mohammed Saghir, who has the ceremonial role as the Sheriff of Nottingham at Nottingham City Council, said: "There are many actors who have played the role of Sheriff of Nottingham, but few have done so as memorably as Alan Rickman in Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves.
"His sheriff was a gloriously nasty character who it was easy to love to hate and who he appeared to have great fun playing.''
