Andy Murray praised for shutting down reporter's 'casual sexism'

The tennis ace did not look impressed

Sir Andy Murray may not have had much luck on the court this year, but he's certainly having his praises sung off it. The two times Wimbledon champion was speaking at a post-match press conference when he was asked about the significance of his opponent being the 'first American player' to reach a Wimbledon semi-final since 2009.

Murray cut the reporter off mid-question to state that he should have said 'male player'. The reporter then nervously laughed and said "yes male player", but the tennis ace did not look amused.

American Serena Williams has won Wimbledon five times since 2009, with one of the finals against her sister Venus.

He was praised on Twitter by those supporting his 'call out for feminism'.

Andy's mum, Judy, also took to Twitter and wrote, 'That's my boy' followed by a love heart emoji.

Back in August 2016 Murray also corrected a journalist who said he was the first person to win two Olympic gold medals in tennis. The Scottish tennis ace pointed out that Venus and Serena Williams have won four each.

Andy Murray exited this year's Wimbledon after losing to world number 28, Sam Querrey in five sets. It was only the second time in eight years Murray has exited Wimbledon before the semi-final stage but he was suffering from an ongoing leg and hip injury.

All British fan's support is now with Johanna Konta, who will play Venus Williams in her semi-final.

Meanwhile Murray has hinted he may take a break saying after the match, "I'll get the best advice I can, then stick with that.

"If it means taking a few weeks' rest, then so be it. If it means training and doing the right rehab and stuff, then I'll do that.

"I have no idea of exactly what that's going to be. Before Wimbledon, it's a very short-term mindset. You're trying to get yourself in the best shape possible for this tournament, and I did that. I did the best that I could.

"Now I'll listen to my team and, you know, get the best advice I can, make a decision after that."

Last week it was revealed that Andy Murray and his wife Kim Sears are expecting their second child. The couple, who married in 2015, already have a one-year-old daughter named Sophia.
