Dundee is the first city in Scotland to launch the junior police youth volunteer scheme.

The programme aims to offer young people from across the area, including those who are vulnerable and from socially excluded backgrounds, the opportunity to learn about life skills, social responsibility and to help them to build positive relationships with the police.

Junior PSYV sessions are led by Senior Youths and Adult Volunteers, who have been coached and trained in mentoring and leadership, to provide positive role models to their younger peers.

The programme will provide a safe consistent activity for them and will also involve junior and senior youth volunteers working together at events and to design problem solving projects and initiatives to address key issues in their communities around crime prevention and community safety.

Group Coordinator for PSYV Dundee, PC Ryan MacDonald said :

'The fact that Dundee has been chosen to launch Scotland’s first Junior PSYV is testament to the success of PSYV Dundee over the last two years and the commitment and enthusiasm of our Adult and Youth Volunteers alike. The success of PSYV across the country has been amazing and to now offer these opportunities to younger children will not only strengthen relationships with our communities but shows the commitment Police Scotland has in working with our youths”

Superintendent Graeme Murdoch said :

'We are delighted that Dundee has been chosen to host Scotland's first Junior PSYV group. This is a really great opportunity for young people in the Senior PSYV to pass what they have learned over the last couple of years'
