Hundreds of University of St Andrews freshers take part in 600-year-old Raisin Monday tradition
Hundreds of freshers from the University of St Andrews have taken part in Raisin weekend celebrations, a tradition that goes back centuries.
University of St Andrews freshers descended on St Salvator's lawn in their droves this morning, armed with cans of shaving foam and engaged in an hour long foam fight as part of the Raisin Monday ritual.
The Fife town came alive with colourful costumes as first year students at one of Britain's oldest universities rounded off their Raisin weekend celebrations, a tradition which has been around for 600-years and is said to originate from new students giving a pound of raisins to their academic parents to say thank you for welcoming them to the university.
