Formal Transfer Of RAF Leuchars Takes Place

Published 31st Mar 2015

The Royal Air Force has marked the formal transfer of RAF Leuchars to Army control.

A short ceremony took place earlier, featuring parades of both RAF and Army personnel.

A Typhoon pair from 1(Fighter) and 6 Squadrons provided a flypast overhead as the RAF Ensign was lowered and replaced with the Army Flag.

The newly named 'Leuchars Station' will now become home to the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards, 2 Close Support Battalion of the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME), and 110 Provost Company of the Royal Military Police.

The runway at Leuchars will be retained, primarily as a diversionary aerodrome for fast-jets with approximately fifty RAF personnel remaining to support. In addition, Leuchars will remain home to 612(County of Aberdeen) Squadron of the RAF Medical Reserves, the East of Scotland Universities Air Squadron and Number 12 Air Experience Flight.
