Travel Chaos As Engineering Train Derails
Commuters faced a day of travel misery today after an engineering train went off the rails in Dundee.
The fully loaded train derailed near Dundee city centre around 2.20am on Monday as it headed north.
That led to a day of cancellations and delays for passengers as the line was shut between Dundee and Carnoustie.
The engineering train derailed near Dundee's City Quay shopping area, less than a mile from the city's station.
The accident happened at the entrance to a tunnel that runs from the main station to the north east of the city.
Scotrail was forced to cancel services between the city and Aberdeen - with a "limited" replacement bus service running between there and Carnoustie, where services from Aberdeen heading south terminated.
It is understood there were no injuries as a result of the derailment, and the Scottish Ambulance Service say they were not called to the scene.
Trains from Edinburgh and Glasgow had to terminate at Dundee through the morning rush hour and were expected to stop their for most of the day.
From the north, central Scotland bound trains from Aberdeen ended at Carnoustie, with "limited" replacement buses running from the Angus town to Dundee.
A spokesman for Scotrail said: "Due to a derailed freight train at Dundee. Trains between Glasgow/Edinburgh and Aberdeen may be cancelled/revised until end of today.
"Trains from Glasgow/Edinburgh-Aberdeen trains will terminate at Dundee. Aberdeen-Glasgow/Edinburgh will terminate at Carnoustie
"We're working to secure replacement transport btwn Carnoustie and Dundee. Please check your journey using .
"Very limited replacement transport secured at moment. Passengers advised to make their own alternative plans if possible.
