Alan MacMillan was having a drink with his ex, Nicola McAndrew, when she told him she was seeing someone else.
She had hidden her relationship with Ryan Rosscraig, 33 - who ended up with a near-two inch piece missing from his ear - from him for around three months.
The revelation caused MacMillan to flip - storming out of a friend's house.
MacMillan walked to Mr Rosscraig's home in Dundee where he found the victim lying on the sofa.
Without warning MacMillan struck - climbing on top of him and repeatedly punching him to the head.
One witness said: "Ryan was trying to fight back but he was getting a doing - he was punching him rapid, loads of times."
Fiscal depute Eilidh Robertson told Dundee Sheriff Court: "The accused then leaned in towards Mr Rosscraig and bit him on the right ear.
"Miss McAndrew intervened at this point, pulling the accused away from Mr Rosscraig and causing the accused to release his grip.
"Whilst this was happening, the accused’s friend called the police.
"The accused remained in the complainer's home for the next ten minutes.
"Miss McAndrew then again asked the accused to leave and this time he agreed on the proviso that she went with him.
"Police attended at the property at 10.30pm and traced the accused and Miss McAndrew outside the block of flats.
"The accused's t-shirt had apparent blood staining on it.
"The officers entered Mr Rosscraig’s flat and found that he had a significant bite wound to his ear, with a section of his ear missing.
"He also had swelling to his face and an ambulance was called for Mr Rosscraig.
"Paramedics noted that there was a 4cm gouge missing from the back of his ear.
"He refused transport to hospital and was advised of the potential consequences of not receiving further treatment.
"He continued to refuse to attend hospital and signed a patient refusal form.
"The paramedics cleaned and dressed the wound as best they could and gave advice about tetanus and hygiene."
MacMillan, 36, a prisoner at HMP Perth, pleaded guilty on indictment to a charge of assault to severe injury and permanent disfigurement committed on August 13 in Dundee.
Solicitor advocate Jack Brown, defending, said: "That evening he came to know, as he suspected, that Nicola McAndrew was in fact seeing someone else.
