Dundee United have signed former Livingston defender Coll Donaldson following his exit from QPR.

Donaldson and the west London club confirmed the 20-year-old's departure on Friday after his contract was terminated by mutual consent.

The centre-back had joined United on their pre-season trip to Holland and the Ladbrokes Premiership club moved quickly to sign the 6ft 3in player on a three-year contract.

Manager Jackie McNamara told the club's official website: "I am really delighted with this capture, he is an excellent defender and he is an excellent addition to the squad. He is skilful, physical and quick and will add to the competition amongst our defenders.

"We are extremely fortunate that he was available and it was important that we got him signed up before others were aware of him. United fans will enjoy watching him play.''

Donaldson, who only made one first-team appearance following his £150,000 move to Loftus Road in January 2014, added: "I am delighted to become a Dundee United player. Things have moved pretty quickly but it is great to sign the contract and I am now looking forward to playing in the tangerine jersey.

"The manager's desire to sign me and his vision for taking the club forward convinced me this was the right place to enhance my development and improve as a player.

"I enjoyed my time at QPR and it has improved me as a footballer and person but this is a great move for me and being across here with the squad for pre-season training camp will help me settle in quickly."
