An elderly woman has died after a house fire this weekend in a village in Cheshire.

Police say they were called out to assist fire crews in Pott Shrigley at around 1.30am on Saturday (December 16) - with a woman inside the home believed to have died as a result of the blaze.

Cheshire Police confirmed crews from Bollington, Poynton, Macclesfield and Lymm were called out to the incident, alongside an aerial ladder platform, and support from two fire engines from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service.

Sharing details of the incident, the fire service confirmed: "Arriving at the scene, crews found a well developed fire involving the first floor and roof space of the property. Firefighters used four breathing apparatus and two hose reels to fight the fire internally, while covering jets were used on the external of the property.

"A large fan was also in use to clear smoke from the affected part of the building."

In a statement, Cheshire Police said: "At around 1.30am on Saturday 16 December, police were called to support Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service following a fire at a house on Shrigley Road, Pott Shrigley.

"Sadly, a woman died as a result of the fire. Formal identification has not yet taken place, but she believed to be a 97-year-old woman.

"Her next of kin have been informed.

"Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service have launched an investigation into the cause of a fire and Shrigley Road remains closed at this time."

Three people from a neighbouring property were sent to hospital as a precaution after smoke inhalation.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.
