A man has been jailed for two decades after being found guilty of a series of rapes and other serious sexual offences.

Jeffrey Corbishley, aged 67, of Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent, subjected the victim to a lengthy period of abuse throughout the 1990s.

The victim came forward to police in 2020 to report what happened to her.

A jury found him guilty of six charges at an earlier hearing – including four counts of rape of a girl under the age of 16 and two counts of indecent assault of a girl under 14.

He appeared at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court on Tuesday 22 August and was sentenced to 20 years behind bars. He was also placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register for life.

Detective Inspector Jim Sproson, of the force’s rape and serious sexual offences (RASSO) team, said:

“I would like to commend the courage of the victim in coming forward and reporting what happened to her as a child.

“The extent of the abuse she suffered at Corbishley’s hands was horrific and he continued to deny responsibility for what he had done while in court.

“I am pleased that the jury saw through Corbishley’s lies and hope his conviction provides some comfort to the victim as she looks to move on with her life.

“I hope this case shows victims of non-recent sexual abuse that you will be believed, you will be taken seriously and we will bring offenders to justice, however long it takes.”
