Health bosses at the Royal Stoke and County Hospital in Stafford have stepped down a critical incident following an 'improvement' in Covid-related staff absences and the reducing numbers of people needing treatment for the virus.

The critical incident was put in place a few weeks ago by University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust due to the number of staff who were off work for reasons relating to coronavirus, and the increasing number of hospital admissions.

In a statement, a spokesperson from UHNM said: " Following improvements with staff absence due to Covid-19 and reducing numbers of admissions we have today de-escalated our internal critical incident.

"That said we are still very busy (more in line to a normal difficult winter) and have a number of patients in our beds who are medically fit to return to their own homes."
