MPs meet over proposals to close some local bank branches
Barclays want to shut branches at Newcastle and Kidsgrove
Jonathan Gullis, Stoke North MP, and Aaron Bell MP for Newcastle-under-Lyme met with David Bruce, Head of Corporate Relations for Barclays’ Central Region, to raise their reservations about the proposed closures.
It's as the bank announced they were considering closing their branch in Kidsgrove on August 11 and their branch in Newcastle-under-Lyme on August 25, citing recent differences in the way people use their services.
Commenting, Jonathan Gullis MP said:
“Bank branches play a vital role in local communities like Kidsgrove. After having conversations with local people over the weekend, I am shocked and appalled by Barclays’ reckless decision. Many people struggle to navigate complicated mobile banking and automated systems. In addition, this will have a knock-on effect on local business who depend on the local Barclays to deposit their hard-earned cash.
"Banks also draw local people into the high street, who will then often go on to visit local shops and restaurants. I am therefore, dismayed that Barclays would seek to inflict this unnecessary decision on Kidsgrove town.
"As such, I strongly recommend that Barclays reverse their decision, given the unprecedented impact this will have on our community.”
Commenting, Aaron Bell MP said:
“It is extremely disappointing news that Barclays intend to close two of their branches, one of which is in my constituency of Newcastle-under-Lyme.
"Local bank branches are very important to my constituents, especially those who find it easier to navigate compared to online banking.
"I am grateful to Barclays for meeting with Jonathan and I so we could challenge this decision. We will continue to push for the branches to be kept open.”
The bank say they will be setting up a presence in both Kidsgrove and Newcastle-under-Lyme in order to help some of their most vulnerable customers transition on from traditional banking. This includes setting up hubs on multiple weekdays, offering guided support.
