It's another loss for the high street.

The Marks & Spencer store in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent is to close permanently within weeks.

It comes just days after Debenhams inside the Potteries Centre shut its doors for good.

I'ts understood more than 60 members of staff at the store on Upper Market Square were informed of the decision yesterday.

Pete Swallow, M&S Regional Manager, said: "Shopping habits are changing, so we’re reshaping our store estate to ensure it meets the needs of customers today – and those of tomorrow. As part of this transformation, we have today announced to colleagues our proposal to close the M&S Hanley store at 11 Upper Market Square in August 2021.

"Our priority now is to talk to our colleagues about what this announcement means for them and wherever possible, offer them alternative roles with M&S. We appreciate that this will be disappointing news for some. We would like to thank all our customers who have shopped in the store, and we will be working hard to keep serving them in our local Wolstanton store."
