A man has been jailed after pleading guilty to causing the death of a woman last year.

Paul Taylor, aged 65, of Bambury Drive, Kidsgrove, was sentenced to three-years behind bars at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court yesterday (Wednesday 13 July), after admitting causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

The court heard how, at 6.25pm on 15 April 2021, front seat passenger Kveta Hangonyiova, and her husband, Frantisek Hangonyi, were travelling on the A50 eastbound, near the Blythe Bridge roundabout.

Frantisek, who was driving the white Vauxhall Insignia, pulled over to the roadside after a suspected mechanical problem occurred within the vehicle.

As a result, the car was stationary partly within lane one of the carriageway.

Taylor, who was driving a white HGV, failed to spot the vehicle and collided with its rear, causing it to roll onto a nearby grass verge.

Both Kveta and Frantisek were either thrown or impacted by their car as a result.

Sadly, despite the best efforts of medical staff, Kveta was pronounced dead at the scene.

Frantisek, who was severely injured, was transported to hospital for emergency treatment.

He has since been discharged and is recovering at home.

Staffordshire Police PC Matt Lovatt, the officer in charge of the case, said: “This is a tragic case where there are no winners and serves to illustrate the importance of driving carefully.

“Negligent use of our roads can have catastrophic consequences, as seen in this case, which is why it is so important to remain focused at all times when behind the wheel.”

Taylor was also disqualified from driving for four years.
