At least 10 people were evacuated and fire crews conducted one rescue from a balcony.

Teams, including two ambulances, two paramedic officers and a Hazardous Area Response Team, worked to treat a number of residents for smoke inhalation at the scene.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: “Crews arrived at the scene to find the fire at a low-rise flat in Tollgate Court with fire colleagues working to safely evacuate residents.

“Sadly, nothing could be done to save one woman inside the property, and she was confirmed deceased on scene.

“Crews assessed several patients who’d been evacuated from the building, and they were all discharged on scene.”

Staffordshire Police tell us the woman's next of kin has been informed and formal identification will take place in due course.

All of the flats have sustained significant smoke and heat damage and the gas and electricity supply at the flats has been isolated.

Fire crews are working with police and local authority colleagues in order to help rehome residents.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway and police have now reopened the surrounding road.
