Councillors concerned over traffic conditions at planned Crewe school
The school is expected to open at Basford in September 2025
Traffic is likely to be a concern when a new primary school is built at Basford, and plans must be put in place to avoid congestion, councillors say.
The free school will open at Basford East, near Shavington, in September 2025 to take pupils from the new housing in the area.
The children and families committee was told on Monday (January 10) that the new school could have two classes per year, with there being numerous large developments close by.
Developments at Basford East. Basford West and the South Cheshire Growth Village will bring in a number of new families.
Cllr June Buckley raised the point of whether transport schemes, such as car sharing or school buses, would be considered to limit the amount of traffic around the school.
"Or, when the schools are built, having a central quick drop-off point so the parents can pull up, the children can get out and walk into school and you haven’t got that clogging.”
She also asked families to encourage their children to walk to school in the summer if they lived within half a mile.
Mark Bayley, acting director of education, replied: “The site for the school is very close to some quite large main roads so transport has got be a high priority here.”
Children and families committee chair, Kath Flavell, said a drop-off point and bus was a good idea: “I think we ought to be doing that for a lot of our primary schools really just to help ease that congestion,” she said.
