A closure of one of the North West's busiest motorways has caused rush hour delays in Lancashire and South Cumbria.

The M6 had to be shut at around 5.30am this morning, after a lorry caught fire on the carriageway.

It was closed from junction 36 (Kirby Lonsdale) to junction 37 (Kendal), with drivers being forced onto a-roads to navigate their way around the incident.

One lane has now re-opened, but there are still long delays in the area.

In an update National Highways said: "The #M6 northbound between J36 #KirkbyLonsdale and J37 #Kendal has reopened following a lorry fire.

"Lane 1 (of 3) remains closed for recovery.

"There are 4 miles of congestion on approach to J36 so allow plenty of extra journey time."
