Police say a man has been detained under the Mental Health Act, after climbing the roof of a shopping centre and protesting in Skelmersdale.

Emergency services were called at around 1.29pm yesterday to the Concourse Shopping Centre, Skelmersdale, after they received reports that a man had climbed up scaffolding with a large banner.

The whole of the area was evacuated and cordoned off, and a standoff ensued overnight, with the man refusing to come down from officers.

The man safely came down himself at around 7.30am this morning, and police have now confirmed he's been detained under the Mental Health Act.
