Football clubs and players in Lancashire get ready to join the world of sport in a united front against racism this weekend
It comes as Blackpool player Grant Ward received racist abuse on Instagram after their one nil victory over Sunderland on Tuesday night
As police continue to investigate racial abuse directed at a Blackpool player, there are calls for everyone to join a national stance against racism.
Yesterday we told you midfielder Grant Ward received vile racist abuse on Instagram after their one nil win against Sunderland on Tuesday night.
A statement from Blackpool on Wednesday read: "Blackpool Football Club is appalled by the abhorrent, racist abuse received by Grant Ward following the team's fixture at Sunderland last night.
"The contents of the message, on his Instagram account, have since been reported to the social media platform and are now being investigated by the police.
"Grant has the club's full and unwavering support in this matter, as we continue to collectively take a stand in the fight against racism and online hatred. Enough is enough.''
Sunderland said in a statement posted on their official Twitter account: "We utterly condemn the vile abuse directed at Grant Ward following our match against Blackpool.
"We will work closely with the police and football authorities to ensure those responsible are identified and punished for this abhorrent and unacceptable behaviour. Enough is enough.''
It comes as football clubs in England along with their players and some sponsors will boycott social media over the bank holiday in attempts to combat racism online.
Paul Kearns is from Show Racism the Red Card, he said this incident shows the boycott is needed more than ever and social media companies need to take more responsibility: "Social media companies haven't paid the issue the attention it deserves. They have a huge responsibility and the fact that high profile celebrity figures and multi-million dollar industries are coming together to tell them they've got a problem and they need to do something I think speaks volumes.
"I think it sends a really strong message that it's a collective effort from right across the game of football...from the top level to the governing bodies, the authorities, the manager's association, the player's union across the women's game as well...it sends a really powerful message from right across the world of football.
"It has huge potential to make a real difference and you know for someone like Jordan Henderson to stand up and say 'taking a stand is no longer optional', I think that's exactly where we are at...something has to be done and I think the fact that this is a united movement and a united effort gives it every chance."
