Proposals to refurbish a skate park in Stanley Park have cleared a key hurdle after town hall planners approved the scheme.

The work will see the existing facilities remodelled as a multi wheeled use track for scooters, skateboards and bicycles.

Supporters of the plans, which were submitted by the council’s park department, include the Friends of Stanley Park who warned skateboarders were damaging other areas of the park.

In a statement backing the application, they said: “The present facilities for the skateboarders are old and not now fit for purpose so they are finding

other places in the park where they try to use their skateboards.

“This is causing damage to ornate and historic features in the park. We feel that with a refurbished area this will hopefully stop this happening and limit the vandalism that they, in some cases, do not realise they are causing.

“The skateboard area has become an eyesore so the refurbishment will not only help the skateboarders with their sport it will also enhance the look of our prize winning historic park.”
