Man charged following machete attack in Accrington

A man from Accrington has been charged after an incident which saw another man attacked with a machete in the town.

Officers were called to reports of an assault on Manchester road at around 6.20am on Saturday (4th December).

The victim, who's in his 30s, was found by police near Grants Bar with serious injuries. He was taken to hospital where he remains.

On the same day, police arrested a 21-year-old man on suspicion of attempted murder.

Martin Gilheaney, 21, of Duncan Square, Accrington, has since been charged with section 18 assault, possession of a firearm and possession of ammunition. He is due to appear at Blackburn Magistrates’ Court today (Monday, December 6th).

DI Carole Langhorn, of Lancashire Police, said: “A man has been charged and is due to appear in court this morning.

“Enquiries are ongoing and we are continuing to ask anybody with information about this incident to get in touch with us straight away.”
