Minecraft version of Preston being used to help kids combat flooding
A new 'mod' has been built which teaches kids how to defend the city from flooding
It's hoped children and teenagers across Lancashire will get a better understanding of what causes flooding, how to prevent it and why we're seeing more floods as part of a new 'mod' that's been made for the popular videogame MineCraft.
The block-building adventure game has been given an educational twist with this latest development where kids are being encouraged to create flood plains, plant trees and choose the right materials to build floodgates.
Children, who can play at home or in school will also be shown the affect climate change is having on flooding across the City, and more widely.
The new initiative has come from a partnership between Microsoft, The Environment Agency and Archbishop Temple School in Preston.
Justin Edwards is the Director of Learning Programmes of Minecraft at Microsoft.
He said:
"We know that people around the world love Minecraft, and so it is really rewarding for us to see Minecraft encouraging students to talk about and engage with environmental issues.
"The game provides an opportunity not just to get to know the flooding scheme in Ribble, but also understand real-world impact in a safe and fun way. The game also shows how communities are impacted, not just individuals. We’re committed to making a better world through the power of play and this project is at the forefront of that vision."
The game is available to play online
