Permission has been granted to build 250 new homes in Poulton, in two separate schemes.

In an application that went before Wyre Council’s planning committee on Wednesday, councillors approved outline planning permission to build 48 houses on land to the south of Tithebarn Street and to the east of Berrys Lane.

The scheme by Baxter Homes also includes construction of a town centre car park for up to 200 spaces.

In a separate application which did not go before the committee, proposals by Story Homes to build 202 houses on land south of Blackpool Road have also been permitted.

Both housing schemes are on land allocated for housing on Wyre’s Master plan, which includes details on how new housing can be provided.

The masterplan, on which there was a public consultation last year, states that the vision is to “create a new sustainable neighbourhood”, which it said would be “integrated into the existing fabric of the town and wider landscape in terms of its design and layout”.

However, many residents fear the town does not have the infrastructure to accommodate further large housing schemes.

Some 14 letters of objection were lodged to the Tithebarn Street application, citing concerns such as highway safety and congestion, noise impact and loss of greenspace.

Approving the application, councillors noted that Lancashire County Highways had no objections.

The planning officer’s report stated: “The applicant has provided supporting documents setting out how the proposal complies with the masterplan.”

Both applicants are now obliged to comply with conditions which include the proviso that thousands of pounds will be provided by the applicants for local services as part of their respective 106 agreements.
