A Wigan couple have escaped a jail after their dangerous American bulldog had to have its jaws prised off the head of a 4 year old boy.

46-year old Jane Anglesea and 46-year old Andrew Young of Adelphi Street, Standish have been setenced to 20 weeks in jail, suspended for two years.

The four-year old victim was seriously injured whilst he was playing with Anglesea and Young's son in their back garden in August last year.

The American bulldog, called Tyson, was found with its jaws around the four-year old boy's head.

The youngster suffered extensive injuries to his skull and was in hospital for nine days.

Anglesea and Young admitted to owning a dog that was dangerously out of control.

They've also been ordered by Wigan and Leigh Magistrates Court to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work and pay £325 each in costs to the court.

They've also been banned from keeping or looking after a dog for life.
