A man’s been cleared of making and placing an explosive device in a busy shopping centre in Preston just days before Christmas.

25-year old David Rutherford of Barry Avenue from Ingol in Preston - was on trial at Preston Crown Court, but a jury decided he wasn't responsible

The incident sparked a major security alert at the Fishergate Centre last December.

Rock FM reporter Amy Scarisbrick has been following the trial:

David Rutherford's mum broke down in tears in court as the jury unanimously acquitted him of all charges.

Over the four day trial, the court heard how a homemade explosive device was made from a lego toy box, an inhaler, a toilet roll tube, a box of matches and firelighters was placed in the men's toilets of the shopping centre just days before Christmas.

The device caught fire and the shopping centre was evacuated for over seven hours.
