A number of houses near Preston have been evacuated this morning after a nearby business premises went up in flames.

A number of houses in Preston have been evacuated this morning after a nearby business premisis went up in flames.

The fire at Whitfire Shavings and Sawdust Supplies on Church Lane near Leyland started just after 09:10 this morning (Tuesday 21st June 2016).

Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service has issued a statement saying:

"Major fire at premises where wood shavings are processed and stored in bulk. No casualties are reported and the firefighting response is ten fire engines and an Aerial Ladder Platform (ALP) and crews."

A spokesperson later said:

"Several bulk sawdust warehouses in an area measuring 100 metres by 100 metres are on fire. Firefighters are using the ALP's water jet from above, two ground monitors (jets) and several hand-held jets."

The latest advice to residents who have been allowed to stay at homeis to keep your doors and windows shut.

Those who've been evacuated should be allowed back tomorrow.
