The family of a man who died while walking along a road in Preston have paid tribute - calling him a wonderfully caring, kind and funny young man.

Nick Farrimond was killed on Pope Lane in Whitestake in the early hours of Monday.

Police are continuing to hold a man on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving

Here's the statement from Nick's family:

“Lynne, Terry and Tom must announce the very tragic and untimely death of their most loved son and brother Nicholas (Nick) Farrimond on the 29th August aged 35.

“Nick was a wonderfully caring, kind and most especially funny young man. His loss will be deeply felt by all his family and huge circle of friends. There is a void in all our lives that will never be filled.”

Police say that at around 12.50am, a silver Toyota Avensis approached an address on Pope Lane close to the junction of Green Lane.

The owner of the vehicle, a 44-year-old taxi driver, was waiting to collect a fare when a red Peugeot 106 neared his car.

Officers believe as the Peugeot got closer to the Toyota, it mounted a grass verge, colliding with a pedestrian.

The Peugeot then collided with a tree, before coming to stop on its side.

Police closed the road for six hours while accident investigators attended.

Sgt Tracey Ward, of the Lancashire Police Roads Policing Team, said: “These are tragic circumstances and my thoughts remain with this man’s family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.

A 32-year-old man from Preston was later arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and drink-driving. He is currently in custody.
