A five-year-old boy is in hospital after a crash on the M6 in Lancashire.

It happened between junctions 30 and 31 at about 7 o'clock last night.

Lancashire Police has issued a statement saying:

"At around 7pm on Sunday evening (April 24) a double decker bus was travelling northbound along the M6 between J30 and 31 after it is thought to have been spilling fuel on to the carriageway.

"A Fiat 500 lost control on the carriageway and collided into the nearside.

"A Ford Fiesta stopped on the hard shoulder to assist when a Renault Megane also lost control and collided with the Fiesta.

"The Renault Megane then spun into lane 3 before colliding with a fifth vehicle (no details about what vehicle this is). "The passenger in the Ford Fiesta, a 5 year old boy, suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital. His injuries are serious but not life threatening. "The junction is currently closed while resurfacing work is being carried out. Lane 1 closures through 31-23 is causing delays. Entry at 31 NB is also closed."
