Breaking Bad & Sherlock Triumph at The Emmy Awards

Breaking Bad was the biggest winner at The Emmy Awards in Los Angeles last night with five prestigious wins.

Honouring the best in television, British drama Sherlock also picked up a hat-trick of gongs at the Nokia Theatre ceremony.

Despite not being present on the night, Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman respectively won best actor and best supporting actor in a mini-series for their roles as Sherlock and Dr Watson.

Sherlock co-creator Steven Moffat also won best writing in a mini-series for the final episode of Sherlock's third season ‘His Last Vow.’

However, it was the immensely popular Breaking Bad that dominated proceedings winning some of the biggest awards on the night including best drama series and best actor in a Drama Series for Bryan Cranston’s role as Walter White.

Cranston’s co-stars Aaron Paul and Anna Gunn won best supporting actor and actress in a drama series, while writer Moira Walley-Beckett also picked up an honour.

Other big winners on the night included Fargo, Modern Family, The Big Bang Theory, Veep, True Detective and The Good Wife.

The show ended with a poignant tribute to Robin Williams by his good friend Billy Crystal who called him "the brightest star in a comedy galaxy".

He said: "It is very hard to talk about him in the past because he was so present in our lives.

"While some of the brightest of our celestial bodies are actually extinct now, their energy long since cool, but miraculously, because they float in the heavens so far away from the sound, their beautiful life will continue to shine on us forever.

"And the glow will be so bright, it will warm your heart, it will make your eyes glisten, and you'll think to yourself, Robin Williams - what a concept."
