Man seriously injured in machete attack in Leeds

Three people armed with weapons raided a shop in Burmantofts earlier

A man's been seriously injured after being attacked by three people armed with machetes at a shop in Leeds.

Police were called to the M&K Off Licence, at the junction of Stoney Rock Lane and Westlock Avenue in Burmantofts, at around 1:30pm this afternoon (June 23).

A 50 year old member of staff had suffered serious injured to his hand and wrist after an incident in the store involving three youths armed with weapons.

He's been seriously injured but isn't thought to be in a life threatening condition.

Police have been carrying out extensive searches in the area.

Detective Inspector James Entwistle, of West Yorkshire Police said:

“Our investigation is still at an early stage and we are working to establish the circumstances surrounding this incident.

“The victim has received very serious and significant injuries to his hand and wrist and he is continuing to receive treatment in hospital.

“We would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the incident or who saw the three youths running off from the scene.”

“We recognise that an incident such as this will cause understandable concern in the community and we are liaising closely with our colleagues on the local neighbourhood policing team who are keeping local community representatives updated and maintaining a visible presence in the area to reassure people.”

Police have put in place extra stop and search powers in the area after the incident.

It gives officers the right to search people or vehicles for offensive weapons for a set period of time.

The Section 60 order covers areas surrounding the A64 York Road including Burmantofts, East End Park, Harehills, Gipton, Halton Moor and Seacroft.
