A man aged 20's been arrested by West Yorkshire Police on suspicion of dangerous driving after a crash in Huddersfield that saw several cars go up in flames.

Police had attempted to stop a driver at Shelley around 8.45 on Friday evening (11th August) and when the car failed to stop began to pursue it.

Five minutes later the car was involved in collision with several other vehicles on Penistone Road at Fenay Bridge, which resulted in one of them setting alight - with flames then spreading to other vehicles.

People in the nearby Harvey's Bar & Kitchen describe hearing loud screeches and bangs with staff from there some of the first on hand to try and help.

Several people received minor injuries with a couple of people needing hospital treatment for more serious, but not life-threatening ones.

A 20 year old man who was discharged from hospital has now been detained by police for questioning.

Officers are also asking anyone who saw what happened to get in touch.

Sergeant Cameron Buchan of the Western Roads Policing Unit, said, "Multiple enquiries remain ongoing today into what has very clearly been an extremely serious collision.

"Frankly, it is very fortunate the consequences were not even worse and I am appealing for anyone who saw what happened or has footage of the collision itself to come forwards.

"Our officers would also like to speak with anyone who saw or has footage of the black VW Golf driving shortly before this collision took place – especially those with Dash Cam recordings."
