A 14-year-old boy has died after a stabbing in Manchester.

At around 6.05pm yesterday evening (Friday 15 September 2023) officers were called to reports of a stabbing on Tavistock Square in the Harpurhey are.

Emergency services attended the scene, and a 14-year-old boy was taken to hospital where he died from his injuries.

His next of kin have been informed and Family Liaison Officers are currently supporting them.

A 14-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody for questioning.

A scene remains in place while officers conduct their investigations.

Greater Manchester Police have also imposed a Section 60 authority which began at 8.26pm yesterday evening (Friday 15 September 2023) and will end at 8.26pm this evening (Saturday 16 September 2023).

These temporary additional powers will allow officers to stop and search people in the part of North Manchester within the red zone below, without needing reasonable grounds to do so.

Detective Superintendent Phil Key said:

“Firstly I would like to share my deepest condolences with the family at this unbelievably difficult time.

“Our Family Liaison Officers are currently working with them and we will continue to support the family throughout this extremely troubling period.

“A Section 60 authority has been put in place which will run for 24 hours and finish at 8.26pm this evening, we have taken this course of action to keep the public who live and work within the vicinity of the incident safe.

“We understand the use of a Section 60 can cause concern to local residents; however, we use these powers only when proportionate and necessary.

"By enforcing the Section 60 in the area, we will work to minimise any violent behaviour and prevent any further serious incidents going forward as our main priority is to keep the public safe."
