Eight men have died attempting to cross the English Channel.

Their bodies were found on the beach in France.

The incident happened off the coast of Ambleteuse in the Pas-de-Calais region of northern France overnight.

French officials say the boat they were on, which was carrying more than 50 migrants, was torn on rocks, while another 45 people were rescued.

It comes less than two weeks after 12 migrants died when their boat sank trying to cross the Channel.

More than 30 people have died in Channel crossings so far this year.

The French public prosecutor has opened an investigation.
