Thousands of people are expected to celebrate Dave Day this weekend - in tribute to Hairy Biker and Cumbrian Dave Myers.

Dave Day is in memory of the TV star - who passed away in February at the age of 66.

Friends, family and colleagues of Dave have organised a memorial bike ride for the personality - an almost 300 mile trip from London to Barrow - Dave's hometown.

The ‘Dave Day’ remembrance procession will bring together bikers from across the country, and friends and fans of Dave in a heartfelt tribute.

The ride is being organised by volunteers and will be led by Dave’s fellow Hairy Biker Si King, and Dave’s friend Jason ‘Woody’ Woodcock.

Here's what you need to know

Organisers of Dave Day are predicting up to 10,000 motorcyclists will take part - with many starting off in North London and others joining the convoy along the route.

The Metropolitan Police, Highways Agency and Cumbria Police have worked with those pulling the event together - to limit disruption to other road users and to make sure those taking part are traveling safely.

Locally, Westmorland and Furness Council has also issued a warning to people as so many people are expected to be in Barrow, as the ride comes to a close - and a big celebration event takes place.

Council officials are advising local people planning to travel to the town to consider available public transport options.

Dave Day will culminate in an explosion of culture with events, bands, plays, food stalls, and a concert.

Dave Myers

One half of cooking duo The Hairy Bikers, Dave Myers died aged 66 on 29 February - two years after revealing he had been diagnosed with cancer.

Dave's best friend Si King announced the sad news in a heartbreaking message shared on social media.

The post confirmed he, Dave's wife Lili, his family and close friend David were all by his side as he sadly passed away.

Lili said Dave was "genuine, full of life and full of energy" and "exactly like the one you saw on TV".

Celebrating Dave Myers

Alongside the motorcycle ride from London to Barrow, there will be a whole host of events in the town - including bands, plays, food stalls, and a concert - to celebrate the life of Dave Myers.

It includes a concert at Craven Park, home of Barrow Raiders rugby league team, and an afternoon of entertainment outside Barrow Town Hall organised by Barrow BID, that will feature an appearance from Si King, and Dave Myers’ wife Lili.

Westmorland and Furness Council says road closures will be in place around the town hall - where large crowds will gather in the afternoon. They also add some of its car parks will be used by the visiting motorcyclists.

The council was already having its own celebration event on the morning to mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day, and the staging that will be used for the D-Day event will be used for Dave Day activities from 4pm onwards.

Councillor Virginia Taylor, Westmorland and Furness Council’s Cabinet Member for Sustainable Communities and Localities, said: “It is truly wonderful to see how so many people are coming together to celebrate the life of Dave Myers.

“From the many businesses to sports clubs and individual fundraisers, our communities have really embraced Dave Day.

"It demonstrates how well-loved he was and how he touched the lives of so many people. I know Dave was a passionate advocate for Barrow and we are looking forward to welcoming people to the town to enjoy Dave Day."
