Man sentenced to 10 years for causing death of girlfriend

A disqualified driver who crashed his girlfriend’s car, causing her death, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison.
Cameron Jones, 29, pleaded guilty to causing the death of Demi Mabbit by dangerous driving, causing death by driving while uninsured and causing death by driving whilst disqualified.
On Friday, 5 April 2024, Jones was driving an Audi S3 at motorway speeds, on residential roads, significantly exceeding the speed limit. Due to his excessive speed, the wet road conditions and insufficient tread on the rear tyres, the car aquaplaned and crashed into a boundary wall.
Witnesses to the scene after the collision, reported hearing Jones say, ‘I need to get the guy who was driving the car’ and ‘My missus just crashed the car’. Jones then fled the scene.
Demi suffered extensive injuries and tragically died seven days later.
Jones eventually surrendered himself at a police station over three weeks later, on 28 April 2024. During a police interview, he answered no comment to all questions, but admitted he was the driver of the Audi.
The prosecution case included CCTV footage showing the vehicle being driven by Jones and him fleeing the scene. DNA evidence from the car corroborated Jones as being the driver.
Jordan Jones, from the Crown Prosecution Service said: "This case highlights the severe consequences of dangerous driving. Cameron Jones’ actions have led to a tragic loss of life, and his attempts to evade responsibility only compounded the grief of Demi Mabbit’s loved ones.
"Our thoughts remain with Demi’s family and friends."
Prosecutor Abigail Jackson read a statement from Gemma Williams, the sister of Demi Mabbit.
She describes Demi as her "little best friend" and said "she was the best sister with a heart of gold."
"My sister didn’t deserve any of this. She trusted too much and fell for the wrong person."
She added that Jones "tore our family apart and left a hole we will never mend."
Barely finishing due to his tears, Demi's father said: "She will be loved and missed by all. She was a wonderful girl with an amazing laugh.
"It's a pain I've never experienced... no father should outlive his children."
In a statement, Demi's family said: "Today has been another difficult day in the journey of our devastating loss.
"No sentence will ever be enough to bring justice for the death of our beautiful girl Demi.
"Demi was only 25 years old, she had her whole life ahead of her. She was the kindest, most selfless person you could meet. She had the biggest heart, the most beautiful smile and a laugh more infectious than any.
"Demi was her Mams best friend, Dad's two eyes. Younger sister to Gemma Ben and Jordan. Older sister to Callie and Keisha but the boss of them all. Her niece and nephews were spoilt rotten and were her world. Nothing was ever to much trouble for her. Our family is broken.
