The trio will be given the honour by their home state in a ceremony next week.

The awards will be presented by Gov. Rick Perry at the Texas Cultural Trust's annual gala Tuesday 1 March, at Austin's Long Center for the Performing Arts. Other 2011 winners include Houston's Alley Theater, longtime CBS news anchor and reporter Bob Schieffer, actors Bill Paxton and Marcia Gay Harden, and Asleep at the Wheel front man Ray Benson.

ZZ Top join previous recipients such as Willie Nelson, Lyle Lovett, Van Cliburn and Clint Black as a rare musical act to receive the award.

The band are currently recording their first studio album since 2003. They are working with Rick Rubin on the follow up to Mescalero.
