Wayward Sons on winning at The Rocks: ‘We feel really privileged’
Wayward Sons’ Toby Jepson has called winning Best New Band at The Rocks 2018 ‘absolutely staggering.’
Speaking to Wyatt ahead of their Special Guest slot at Winter’s End, Toby said he was thrilled as the awards are completely voted for by the fans themselves.
“I think what’s amazing about what you’ve done with these awards, you put it back in the hands of the fan,” Toby said. “All the way through my career and I’m pretty sure Nic (Wastell, bass) will agree, we’ve always felt it’s been about the fans – when you do that you get a real measure of what they want to listen to and what they like and so (winning the award is) absolutely staggering.
“I’ve never won anything in my entire life so this is the first thing ever. We feel really privileged.”
He continued: “The power rests in the fans’ hands, always has done, always will. you give voice to that with this (The Rocks award) and it’s just wonderful. just to be even nominated at this stage in the band’s development is extraordinary.”
Nic added: “To be nominated for the three – the single (Best British Single for ‘Until The End’) and the album (Best British Album for ‘Ghosts Of Yet To Come’) as well – we’re literally blown away.”
Formed 18 months ago, Wayward Sons only played their first show – at Bristol Louisiana – six months ago and Toby admits “it’s all been a bit of a whirlwind.”
The 50-year-old rocker said: “It’s been like a rebirth for us all I think – not Sam (Wood, guitars) because he has just been born.
“When you make music and you spend all your life doing it and you get opportunities to make records and to build an audience and play in front of people – I really believe it’s a privilege.
“And I’m not just saying that, it’s a privilege for people to come out, spend their fifteen quid, ten quid whatever, buy a shirt and all that stuff, it’s a real privilege to have that happen to you and I think you’ve got to make; our responsibility is to make as good a music as we possibly can.
“So every opportunity we’ve had to do that in our lives, I think we’ve taken that and hoped we’ve done job we possibly could at the time. I think we all feel this album is the best work any of us have ever done ever in our careers for lots of reasons and we feel buoyed by it.”
Wayward Sons were later presented with their Best New Band award after their Winter’s End set.
