WATCH: Phil Campbell gets emotional ‘every day’ about past members of Motörhead
Moments after he wrapped up his thunderous Winter’s End set with his Bastard Sons, Phil Campbell spoke to Wyatt on the main stage balcony.
Alongside playing their own material, during their performance Phil Campbell and the Bastard Sons blitzed through Motörhead’s seminal classic ‘Rock On’ and dedicated their final two tracks – Hawkwind’s ‘Silver Machine’ and the ultimate Ace of Spades – to “past members of Motörhead.”
Asked by Wyatt whether he still gets emotional about his late Motörhead band mates Lemmy Kilmister, Michael "Würzel" Burston and Phil ‘Philthy Animal’ Taylor together with the recently deceased ‘Fast’ Eddie Clarke, Phil said: “Yeah I do y’know every day. Sometimes you really… it’s a bit of a struggle.”
However, Phil believes that performing their music on stage is a “positive” experience: “It goes to the positive (when you're performing Motörhead songs) I think yeah. I think all the boys would just want me to give it some.”
Explaining why ‘Killed By Death’ – a Motörhead classic he co-penned – was omitted from the Winter’s End setlist, Phil said: “I need to give that a rest for a while, I’m being polite about it. No, it’s a great song.
“I think what it is with my generation and the boys’ generation – they’re all four years apart anyway – so when we’re combining their influences and my influences it’s about getting the (setlist) material right.”
Commenting on their cover of Hawkwind’s ‘Silver Machine’, which appears on The Bastard Sons’ debut album ‘The Age of Absurdity’, Phil said: “We convinced Lem to (perform) it with Motörhead many years ago. We did it for a few years.
“I always thought the song was great y’know and we’ve been playing it with the Bastard Sons for a while and we decided put it on like as a bonus thing (on ‘The Age of Absurdity’) and I called up Dave Brock – because we’ve done some great shows with Hawkwind - I asked Dave does he mind playing on ‘Silver Machine’ and he called me the next day and said ‘I’ve done it Phil, it was raining yesterday I had nothing to do.’ Dave did us proud, he did some guitar and vocals.”
