Unfortunately they weren’t a good luck omen for their team San Jose Sharks.

Metallica’s James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett performed the US national anthem 'Star-Spangled Banner' before an ice hockey finals game last night.

Both sporting the jerseys of their beloved San Jose Sharks, the metal greats played the anthem as the Sharks and Pittsburgh Penguins players came on for Game Four of the Stanley Cup Finals.

Wielding their instruments, lead guitarist Hammett delivered the main hook in his trademark style while Hetfield added a bit of musical muscle and backbone.

Unfortunately for all concerned, Hetfield and Hammett didn’t prove to be good luck mascots as the Pittsburgh Penguins stormed to a 3-1 victory at San Jose’s SAP Center.

Exactly a month ago, the pair performed the national anthem at a baseball game between their team San Francisco Giants and Colorado Rockies. The game ended in a 6-4 victory for the Giants.

Metallica’s first studio album in eight years is widely expected to see the light of day later this year.
