WATCH: Foo Fighters cover Rush’s ‘Tom Sawyer’ with a fan on vocals
Foo Fighters performed Rush’s classic song ‘Tom Sawyer’ at a recent show in Illinois with help from an audience member.
After performing a cover of Van Halen’s ‘Jump’, Dave pointed at the 16,500 capacity crowd at the State Farm Center saying: “Who knows how to sing ‘Tom Sawyer’? Somebody here knows ‘Tom Sawyer’. No bullst, who knows it? You? You’re pointing at yourself. Get up here mother*er. You’re going to do a Rush song.”
The audience member then walked on stage and introduced himself to Dave, with the frontman adding: “You look like you know a Rush song. Ladies and gentlemen Mike Carpenter says he knows ‘Tom Sawyer’. Ready? We haven’t done this in f***ing years so let’s see what happens.”

It was the first time Foo Fighters had played 'Tom Sawyer' in over two years and only their tenth performance of the seminal anthem in their entire career - having performed it once in 2000, Foos then played it eight times in 2015 on the Sonic Highways World Tour.
Two of those 2015 shows at the Honda Center in Anaheim and at Rexall Place in Edmonton also featured audience members guesting on vocals.
Foo Fighters are outspoken fans of Rush and Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins inducted the Canadian trio into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013. The Foos also performed Rush’s ‘2112’ at the ceremony disguised in wigs and white kimonos.
