WATCH: 20,000 Queen fans sing Happy 70th Birthday to Brian May
Queen legend Brian May has turned 70 years old today (19th July).
Marking Brian’s (almost) birthday on stage at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto last night, Adam Lambert invited the crowd to a Happy Birthday singalong shortly before they launched into ‘Somebody to Love’.
“In only a couple of hours, it will be Brian May’s birthday. So, shall we sing?”, Adam asked.
The 20,000-strong audience then duly complied as a huge birthday cake and the message ‘Happy Birthday Brian’ was projected onto the screens. Watch the moment here:
In a Happy Birthday double-whammy, Brian was also presented with a surprise birthday cake during the soundcheck for the Toronto gig.
Sharing footage, Queen wrote: “The Birthday Boy! 70 years young and still rocking the globe! Have a great day BM!”
Following the show, Metallica’s James Hetfield, Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo dropped by at the afterparty to give Brian their birthday blessings.
Sharing photos of James clutching his Red Special guitar, Brian wrote: “So happy to see these guys who were in tonight. #metallica rocks. Seen with Bri's Red Special.”
Also on tour in Canada, Metallica performed at the Rogers Centre in Toronto on Sunday and play Parc Jean-Drapeau in Montreal tonight (19th July).
Outspoken Queen fans, Metallica recorded a cover of ‘Stone Cold Crazy’ in 1990 and later included it as the b-side to ‘Enter Sandman’ the following year.
James Hetfield also performed the cover with Queen and Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi at The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert at Wembley Stadium in April 1992.
Metallica play five sold-out UK shows this October, while Queen + Adam Lambert play an extensive run of arena shows on these shores in November and December.
