A report in a US magazine suggests recent health scare was worse than first thought

The National Enquirer reports that Eddie Van Halen's emergency surgery last week was a result of a drastic and controversial diet called the Master Cleanse Diet.

According to the report the diet requires you to replace food with a liquid consisting of water, fresh lemon juice, maple syrup and cayenne pepper. However, this diet, when combined with a bout of diverticulitis can apparently prove to be life threatening.

"Eddie’s abdominal region was a disaster area,” said a source. "The spicy treatment touched off an explosion in his intestines. His family were sick with worry because he was in so much pain, it really was touch and go."

"The stress of fad diets increases pressure on the colon, and if the person has diverticulitis there may be leakage from the bowel into the abdomen,” Dr. James O’Brien told the magazine.

The guitarist is expected to be out of action for around six months but he is expected to make a full recovery.
