The show may have been saved

A revamped production of Broadway musical Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark is now in previews and will have its official opening next month, and it seems that the show may not be quite the disaster it was looking set to be.

The show features a score by U2's Bono and The Edge and has been re-worked to include not only some new scenes but one brand-new song, A Freak Like Me.

In addition, snippets of U2 classics like Beautiful Day and Where the Streets Have No Name are now woven into the production.

Critics who managed to get into the show seemed a great deal more impressed than they were two months ago.

"Aside from a couple of technical glitches and one late entrance, the show unfolded fairly smoothly," the New York Times reported of the revamped musical. The paper also highlighted "a streamlined plot pitting young love against duty, and a conflicted superhero against a droll super villain."

Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark is the most expensive musical ever staged, with a staggering budget of 70 million dollars.

The musical recently went on hiatus for nearly a month after a series of delays prompted by technical glitches, cast injuries and negative reviews from critics. The show's original director has also been replaced.

Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark will have its official Broadway opening on 14 June.
